Sustainable housing meeting in Sydney

Yesterday I had the great opportunity to have a meeting with two persons in charge of an amazing sustainable housing project. This concept is modern, deeply innovative, quick and easy to install and move, and totally made from sustainable materials. And the best is that it's a competitive concept. I have to say I had never heard of such a concept before. This represents one of my most interesting contacts from the start of my project, and I'd really be happy to stay in contact with them and contribute to the following steps.

For any further information, please don't hesitate to get back to me.

Sydney housing

Beaches around Sydney are places of happiness and farniente. With wonderful views on the ocean and rocks in front of the sea, these are kinds of places where you want to stay for a long time, and if you can, purchasing a house makes sure that you're about to live in a very beautiful house.

I've made some pics and videos in Palm Beach, Whale Beach, in the north of Sydney, and the less I can say is that I was not disappointed. Houses there are intelligent, beautiful, and of course, as very often in Australia, rigorously environment-friendly.

Here you can see pictures of houses in Palm Beach.

There you can see pictures of houses between Palm Beach and Whale Beach.

And finally on the road back to Sydney, interesting buildings have been made, look below.

Back to Mosman, in front of Sydney Central Business District, beautiful houses have been built in front of the bay. They're wonderful. Look below.

Houses in St-Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria

10 km in the north of Melbourne, in front of the ocean, you can see interesting houses, built I would say 20 to 30 years ago, some of them are modern, others look more ancient.

I think they represent a good example of Australian housing.

Have a look on the video below, made from a bicycle.

Environmental-friendly houses in Torquay, "Ocean Beach", Victoria

Before getting to Melbourne I had the opportunity of visiting a new neighborhood in the south coast of Victoria, in Torquay, one of the best places for surfing in Australia. These houses were really amazing because they were really modern but very well inserted in their wild environment, close to the plains and beaches. Check videos and pictures below.

What I suggest is to get a contact with the promoter of this neighborhood for further details.

Merry Christmas to all, and enjoy the blog !

Renewable energies in the public sector

After two weeks in Australia, we’ve had the opportunity to see the importance of renewable energies in this country. On the public sector, we’ve seen that the Australians have been using sun energy a lot, in the street lights for instance. This energy is present in all kinds of towns, which means that it has a certain past in the Australian urbanism. Nevertheless, this kind of energy in the street lights represents a minority, which means that there’s still lots of things to develop in this area.

Wind energy in Australia

Last week we’ve been through south Western. Passing through Margaret River, Augusta, Templeton, Bunbury, we’ve seen many desert places, close to cities. It’s pretty interesting to see that all these places are really windy and present many uncovered places along the ocean. It’s sure that Australians have a big experience in terms of sun and warmness energy, but till now I’ve only seen few eolians. It could be interesting to talk about it to one of my belgian college friends’ father, implied in the implement of eolians abroad.

With the contact I have now in the WA government, I could be the business link between the two. Thus I suggest to send an e-mail to my friend’s father, explaining the project, and talking about these different points. I know he’s already installed in Argentina, Chile and other far countries. He could be interested in this implementation. I also suggest to talk about it to his two sons, who have the responsibilities of the other business unit of the company.

In South Australia eolians have already been installed on the front-of-sea.

Have a look on the video below. With all my apologies for the low quality.

Beach houses in Glenelg, Adelaide, Southern Australia

It's good to see a town building houses and buildings and respecting at the same time its direct environment. That's a thing we've seen from the beginning of the trip. In Perth, and now in Adelaide, we've to admit the ability of Australians to manage a strong demand without forgetting their quality of life.

In Glenelg, 10 km from Adelaide city centre, there are huge beautiful beaches. 2 reasons why Australians want to get there for holidays or simply for living. Local authorities and promoters have made a great job and succeeded in their work. The front-of-the-sea houses are sometimes big or high, but they're never giving the impression of leaving environment aside.

While I had the pleasure to spend time there, I've enjoyed this opportunity to make some pics of these houses and buildings.

First week in Australia

Well, the first week in Australia was really interesting. Let’s make a first synthesis ;

I have a contact with the Western-Australian government, through its energy and foreign trade ministry. I have names, e-mails, functions and phone numbers of the ministers in charge of the business sectors that concern my project. This a first relevant step. For instance, this is a way to connect companies through existing connections, and it can help my activity in Europe.

Then, I’ve got a contact with the economic person of the Alliance Francaise in Perth. In terms of networking, this person can be a very good French contact for the following steps of my relationships with the Australian construction market.

Concerning ideas of construction, I’ve made a little pics report in the town of Mandurah, in the south of Perth, where a pilot sustainable houses neighborhood has been built. It can be watched on the slideshow on the right of the home page of the blog, as well as on my picasaweb account.

In terms of business, I’ve made an interesting visit in a timber industry in Nannup. His sales manager is interested in developing business in France and Europe, and has a good opinion on introducing him to the distributors, builders and promoters through a consulting mission I would provide to them. This is definitely a contact to keep for me.

Last but not least, I have a contact with the trade commission of the federal Australian government. This commission gives assistance to companies in their export development. It’s a wonderful contact for my prospection projects in Australia, because this commission is the typical kind of organization I would like to work for.

The project is going on with South Australia, and then South Wales.

Talk to you soon.

Sustainable construction reference books

I was told about few very interesting books regarding sustainable construction methods and perspectives. These are the first ones on the list ;

"A handbook on low-energy buildings and district-energy systems" by Danny Harvey

"Traité de construction durable" éditions du Moniteur

"The Hand Sculpted House" by Ianto Evans, Michael Smith and Linda Smiley

Special thanks to Guillaume and Vincent

WA Timber Industry

Thursday, 6 December 2007

It was a third exceptional day on our way to Sydney. Today we were in southern WA, on the road from Margaret River to Bunbury. We went through Augusta, Penberton, Nannup and Bunsbury.

More than a fantastic way of discoverings, I had today very interesting potential business contacts, within a company located in Nannup. This company manufactures lumber for roofing, flooring and decking as well for private houses as commercial or social buildings. I first had a discussion with the thechnical manager. He proposed me very kindly the visit of the factory. 600.000 lumber m3 are manufactured every month in the branch. The company is part of a big group, whose presence is everywhere in Australia. They’re very present on export programs to Asia, North America and a little bit in Europe. Then I had a meeting with their sales manager, whom I explained what I can propose them, as a consulting service to develop their business in Europe. He told me about the weak costs of transport they currently have with Europe. He also told me about their niche strategy, which I answered him being totally corresponding to any start of expansion on the very various french market.

The best was to come. This sales manager is in close contacts with the Australian Trade Commission. As part of the australian federal government, this commission gives assistance to companies in their export strategies. They’ve recently proposed a certain number of companies to take part in a business programm, in the aim of developing business in Middle-East and Russia, on the construction sector. Great !

It’s typically a fantastic contact for me. The services I can propose to these companies become fully profitable if they’re resulting from a deep analysis, and a very long relationship work with potential customers. Instead of proposing the same small service to different companies, it’s more interesting for everyone to get to a global consulting supply, with a global market analysis, and why not the reception of a delegation of companies in France. This global approach reduces thus the prices for the manufacturers, as they’re making it collectively, and represents for me a more interesting intellectual and business work, at the same cost. Global doesn’t mean massive. After that it’s anyway interesting to personalize the service by organizing meetings with potential partners that strictly correspond to the business profile of the manufacturer.

Things have been explained and it’s a really good contact for me.What I suggest is thus to keep contact with this company (sending an e-mail to the sales manager explaining what we can do for them in terms of business development in France), and at the same time to enter in contact with the Australian Trade Commission, in order to present the project and try to develop relationships with them.

Mandurah sustainable houses

Wednesday, 5 December 2007

Things are going well.We had a contact yesterday with the australian government, through its representants in Perth. Thanks to this contact I have now the name and details of the persons to deal with as well in terms of foreign trade as sustainable housing in Western Australia. During a short meeting in the offices of WA Government on St George's Terrae, I had the opportunity of presenting the objectives of my mission in Europe. What I suggest is to present properly projects and objectives to these different ministers. Situation of the construction market in France, opportunities for australian manufacturers, business sectors to develop. Then I would propose to analyse the current relationships between the australian and european building industries, and benefit from these current relationships to develop business contacts.

On the road to Margaret River, in the south of Perth, I had the opportunity to visit a pilot area of sustainable houses (lotissement pilote), in Mandurah. They’ve built there an extraordinary business platform, with renewable-energy sustainable houses. This area is a perfect vitrin of what Australian builders are currently developing. On this basis, I would suggest to contact Mandurah authorities, and get a contact with the company that built these houses. You can have a look on the pics below.

Perth

Tuesday, 4 December 2007

Perth looks like a cousin of Vancouver in British Columbia. With the proximity of the sea, the modern buildings and the very large roads, we feel like being in Western Canada. This comparison goes to the way of building houses, which is quite similar. As previewed before the departure, this market is a good target for Canadian manufacturers. And if they build such kinds of houses, they can probably propose such products to the european market. To be continued..

Thanks to our friend David Blenkinsop, formally director of Perth festival, we have a contact with the economic reperesentant at the alliance francaise of Perth, to present the project and exchange points of views on construction in Europe and Australia. That is contact to follow up.

A bientôt
